Mobile Payments in China: Alipay and WeChat Pay for Visitors

Mobile payment is part of everyday life in China, from restaurants and taxis to convenience stores. International visitors can link eligible foreign cards to Alipay and WeChat Pay, but it is wise to prepare a backup method as well.

Set up before you travel

Download the official Alipay and WeChat apps from your device’s app store. Register with a phone number you can continue to access and follow the in-app identity verification prompts. Names and document details should match your passport.

Link an eligible international card

Open the payment or wallet section and add the card details requested. Availability depends on card issuer, network and account checks. The Chinese government’s official payment guide states that overseas visitors can link international cards, including Visa and Mastercard, to Alipay and WeChat Pay.

Understand the two common QR flows

  • You scan the merchant: open the scanner, scan the merchant code, enter the amount if needed and confirm.
  • The merchant scans you: open your payment code and let the cashier scan it.

Always confirm the merchant and amount before authorizing. Do not let strangers handle your unlocked phone or ask you to share verification codes.

Why a payment can fail

A card issuer may block the transaction, a merchant category may not support the linked card, identity verification may be incomplete, or the connection may be unstable. Start with a small purchase before relying on the setup for a critical journey.

Keep three backups

  • A second card from another issuer or network
  • A modest amount of RMB cash
  • A physical card for merchants that accept international cards directly

Cash remains legal tender, even though some small merchants may need time to provide change. Large hotels and major transport facilities are more likely to support multiple payment methods.

Simple security rules

Use a strong device lock, enable transaction alerts, avoid screen-sharing with unknown people and never reveal an SMS or payment verification code. If a phone is lost, contact the card issuer and use the app’s account-security controls as quickly as possible.

The best setup is not “mobile only.” It is mobile payment plus a tested card and cash backup.
