China High-Speed Rail: A First-Time Traveler’s Guide
China’s high-speed rail is often the most convenient way to travel between major cities. The system is orderly, but large stations and real-name ticketing can feel unfamiliar on a first journey.
Book with the same passport you will carry
The English 12306 website and app support eligible foreign passport holders after account activation and identity verification. Enter names and passport numbers exactly as shown in the document. The MTR’s 12306 purchasing guide also notes that the English service is available for recognized foreign passports.
Third-party booking platforms may offer a simpler interface, but check their service fees and change policies. Whichever channel you use, the passenger name and document number must match the traveler.
Choose the correct station
Many cities have several stations, often far apart. “Beijing,” “Beijing South” and “Beijing West,” for example, are different places. Confirm the full station name before paying and use it when planning the transfer.
Arrive with time to spare
For a first trip, arriving 45–60 minutes before departure is a comfortable target at a large station. Allow longer during major holidays. You may pass through a document check and security screening before reaching the departure hall.
Use your passport as the travel document
Tickets are linked to the identity document used for booking. Carry the original passport. If an automatic gate does not read it, use the staffed channel rather than repeatedly trying another gate.
Read the departure board
Match the train number, departure time and destination. The board will show a waiting area or gate. Boarding usually begins shortly before departure and closes before the scheduled time, so stay near the correct gate.
Find the carriage and seat
Your booking displays a carriage and seat number. Platform markings show where each carriage will stop. Keep luggage manageable, place larger bags in the designated rack and keep valuables with you.

- Save the booking details offline.
- Check the arrival station before booking onward transport.
Once the first journey is complete, the process becomes straightforward: correct station, correct passport, correct gate and enough time.
