What to Buy in China: Useful Products and Souvenirs Worth Considering
The best purchase from China is not necessarily the most expensive or the most “traditional.” It is something you understand, can carry home and will genuinely use or remember.
Tea and tea ware
Tea can be compact and meaningful, but quality and taste vary widely. Buy from a shop that lets you see the packaging, origin and production date. Small cups, gaiwans and travel tea sets are easier to pack than large decorative sets.
Stationery and creative supplies
Chinese notebooks, pens, seals, paper goods and art supplies can offer strong design at modest prices. Test pens where permitted and protect delicate paper products from moisture and bending.
Practical electronics accessories
Cables, chargers, power banks and phone accessories are widely available, but check electrical specifications and safety markings. A low price is not useful if the product is incompatible at home. Airlines also impose rules on spare batteries and power banks, so confirm them before purchasing.
Regional food products
Packaged snacks, spices and sweets can make good gifts. Choose sealed, clearly labelled products and check expiry dates. Before buying meat, fresh produce, seeds or herbal ingredients, verify the customs rules of the destination country.
Textiles and everyday design
Scarves, bags, socks, umbrellas and small home items can be more practical than fragile ornaments. Examine stitching, zippers, fabric composition and care instructions rather than judging only by appearance.
Crafts with a clear origin
Paper cutting, ceramics, embroidery and other regional crafts are more meaningful when the seller can explain where and how they were made. If authenticity matters, ask for documentation and avoid treating a sales story as proof.
