How to Use DiDi in China: A Step-by-Step Guide for Visitors
DiDi is a widely used ride-hailing option in China. The app interface and payment choices can change, but the booking process follows a familiar sequence: verify your account, set a pickup point, enter the destination, choose a ride and check the arriving car.
1. Prepare the account
Download the official China DiDi app from your device’s app store, or access the DiDi mini program inside Alipay or WeChat if available to your account. Use a phone number that can receive verification messages. Select English where offered and allow location access while using the service.
2. Add a payment method
Review the payment methods shown in the app or mini program. Depending on the account and current service, these may include Alipay, WeChat Pay or an eligible card. Prepare a backup payment method before requesting a critical airport or station ride.
3. Set the pickup point carefully
The blue location dot is not always the correct curb or entrance. Large airports, railway stations and shopping centres have designated pickup areas. Follow signs and select the exact gate, level or zone shown in the app.
4. Enter the destination
Search for the hotel, attraction or address. When several results look similar, compare the district and map position. Saving the Chinese address from the hotel confirmation reduces ambiguity.
5. Choose a ride category
Compare the estimated price, vehicle type and waiting time displayed before confirmation. The cheapest option may have a longer wait. Airport tolls, parking or route changes may affect the final amount.
6. Meet the correct car
When the driver arrives, match the license plate, vehicle description and driver information shown in the app. Do not enter a different car because someone calls out a destination. At busy pickup points, keep messages short and use the built-in translation tools where available.
7. During and after the ride
Follow the route on the map, wear the seat belt and keep belongings together. Confirm that the trip has ended in the app before leaving. Review the final charge and use in-app support for a genuine discrepancy.
