Staying Connected in China: SIM Cards, eSIMs, Wi-Fi, and Internet Access
A reliable connection makes payments, navigation, translation and transport much easier in China. The right choice depends on trip length, budget, phone compatibility and whether you need a Chinese phone number.
Option 1: International roaming
Roaming is usually the simplest option because your existing number stays active. Confirm coverage, data allowance and charges with your carrier before departure. It is particularly useful when banking or travel accounts send security codes to your home number.
Option 2: Travel eSIM
An eSIM can be installed before departure and activated on arrival. Check that the phone is unlocked and supports the specific eSIM. Many travel eSIMs are data-only, so they cannot receive ordinary calls or SMS messages. Keep this limitation in mind when setting up apps.
Option 3: Local SIM card
A local SIM can provide a Chinese number and may suit a longer stay. The Chinese government’s guide to working and living in China says foreigners can take a passport or other accepted identity document to service outlets operated by China Telecom, China Mobile or China Unicom to apply for a SIM and activate service.
Choose a plan based on expected data usage, not only the headline price. Ask when the allowance expires and how to top up.
Public and hotel Wi-Fi
Wi-Fi is useful as a supplement, not a complete plan. Some networks require SMS verification, and open networks should not be trusted for sensitive payments or account changes. Use the official network name and ask hotel staff when uncertain.
Internet access and app availability
Some services commonly used outside China may work differently or may not be directly available. Check the current status of essential work, communication and cloud services before travel. Download offline maps, translation resources, reservations and emergency information.
A reliable two-layer setup
- Primary data: roaming, eSIM or local SIM
- Backup: a second SIM/eSIM or trusted Wi-Fi
- Keep the home number active if you need SMS verification
- Carry a power bank and charging cable
Test data, maps and payments soon after arrival, while airport or hotel assistance is still nearby.
